Ukraine's War: EU Preparations Sanctions for war crimes and a restriction on Russian oil

The EU has proposed some of its harshest sanctions on Russia to yet, including a total embargo on oil imports and sanctions against war crimes suspects.

According to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, the package aims to increase pressure on Russia while minimizing damage to Europe.

She stated that Russian crude oil would be phased out in six months.

Military officers suspected of war crimes in Bucha and Mariupol would face new penalties as well.

"This sends another vital signal to the perpetrators of the Kremlin's war: We know who you are, and you will be held accountable," Ms von der Leyen said in a statement to the European Parliament on Wednesday.

For weeks, the EU has been debating how to wean itself off Russian oil and gas.

Last year, Russia supplied the EU with a quarter of its oil imports, and Germany was the biggest buyer. However, Germany has dramatically reduced its reliance on Russian oil imports, down from 35% to 12%. The UK, which is no longer in the EU, is already phasing out Russian oil, which accounts for 8% of its imports.

Russian banks and television are being targeted.

The EU halted transmissions of two networks, RT and Sputnik, that broadcast in English, German, and Spanish shortly after Russia invaded Ukraine. It has now targeted three of Russia's largest state-run broadcasters through cable, satellite, smartphone, or online.

"We have recognized these TV outlets as aggressively amplifying Putin's lies and misinformation," Ms von der Leyen added. Although the three networks were not identified, they are expected to include state-owned operator VGTRK's popular Russian-language channels Rossiya and RTR Planeta.

She also stated that providing European services to Russian corporations through accountants, lawyers, and spin-doctors would be prohibited.

Earlier sanctions have already targeted Russian banks, but the largest of all, Sberbank, has been spared.
